Routine Dental Exam and Cleaning

A routine dental exam includes a thorough inspection of the teeth and gums to identify potential problems and plaque build-up. X-rays are taken as needed. Routine checkups typically conclude with a full dental cleaning by a dental hygienist.

When Was Your Last Dental Exam?

According to the American Dental Association, a person’s dentist should determine the frequency they should visit the dentist. The industry standard rule of thumb is that a dental exam should be performed every six months. If your dentist believes you are at a higher risk for gum or tooth disease, they may request to see you more often.

It doesn’t matter when your last appointment was. We want our patients to have the nicest possible smile and be pain free. Our expert dental team is non-judgmental and we go out of our way to make you feel comfortable during your dental exam.

Why Get A Routine Dental Exam?

Adults, children and seniors should have a routine dental checkup every six months to ensure their teeth remain healthy and strong.

Regular dental checkups should be included in a person’s normal health regimen. Healthy teeth and gums are important for long-term dental and physical health. A dental visit every six months is considered the best practice for maintaining good oral hygiene and health.

What Does A Dental Exam Include?

During your dental exam, your family dentist and his team of dental professionals typically perform the following services:

  • Xrays
  • Examination of teeth and gums
  • Inspection of fillings
  • Mouth cancer screening
  • Gum disease risk evaluation
  • Thorough teeth cleaning
  • Flossing

If your sceening uncovers any issues, your dentist will discuss possible treatment options and determine which is best for you. We determine which treatments are critical for optimal oral health and which are elective, so that you can make the best informed decision on how to proceed. We can let you know which treatments are covered by your dental insurance as well.

If you need a dental appointment, please call our office at (352) 848-1050 or contact us on the website here. Coming in every six months for your routine checkup allows the dentist to see how well you take care of your teeth and to address any possible dental problems.

Do You Screen For Oral Cancer?

Of course. Like many modern dentists, we incorporate screenings for oral cancers into our dental exam. Adults typically should have a screening done every year. However, if you smoke, chew tobacco, use alcohol or are over the age of 40, our dentist may recommend a screening every six months or as needed.

Patients that drink or use tobacco excessively are at the highest risk for contracting oral cancer. However, anyone, regardless of their risk, can contract oral cancer. Even patients with poor fitting dentures may be susceptible. If not detected early, oral cancer can be a possible life threatening disease. For a comprehensive dental exam that includes oral cancer screening, please call our friendly office staff at (352) 848-1050 or contact us on our website here.
