Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a standard procedure here at The Dental and Denture Care Center. However, for many patients, hearing the words surgery or extraction can produce some anxiety. Dr. Juan C. Fabrega wants you to know that extraction of these special teeth is a safe, quick and comnfortable process. You will be in and out in no time.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Humans grow three sets of molars in their lifetime. The first set comes in around age six. The second set appears around age 12. The last set starts coming in around the late teens. Since they appear later in life, the third set of molars is called “wisdom teeth”. They appear in the very back of the mouth. There are two on top and two on the bottom and make up a complete set of 32 adult teeth.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Pulled?

Despite what nature intended, the human mouth is designed to hold 28 teeth and not 32. When these third sets of molars start growing in, all the space used for teeth has already been occupied. Thus, when the wisdom teeth start to grow in, they usually grow improperly and usually at a sideways angle. This is called an impacted wisdom tooth. Ninety percent of people will have at least one impacted wisdom tooth that needs to be extracted. Even when these teeth grow in a proper position, they can still become infected.

According to the American Dental Association, your dentist may recommend wisdom teeth removal if you are experiencing uncomfortable changes in that area of the mouth such as:

  • Tooth Decay
  • Extreme Pain
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Consistent Infections Behoind The Lower Last Tooth
  • Damage To Other Molars
  • Gum Disease

The removal of wisdom teeth can also be a necessary step for preparing other teeth for braces. Whether or not to remove this extra set of teeth is unique to each patient. Talk to our dentist about the health and position of your wisdom teeth and he will be able to discuss a treatment plan that is right for your situation.

When Should I Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

As this third set of molars grows in, timing to remove them is everything. When considering to have dental surgery to have these extra teeth removed, you may notice that others your age are having their third molars removed at the same time. That’s because there is a small window of time between the age of 17 to 25 where the roots of the wisdom teeth haven’t fully formed yet. The chances of damage to any nearby nerves or bane structure caused by an impacted wisdom tooth are much less during this time.

Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Expensive?

Wisdom Teeth removal can be a more involved dental surgery procedure than a standard tooth extraction. So the cost involved can depend on several different factors such as the number of teeth that need to be removed or how extensive the impaction is. Our expert dental team will discuss all costs involved up front with you and provide options that may be covered by your dental insurance.

Since it is very common for the development of these extra teeth to cause so many problems involving bone damage, infection and gum disease once the roots develop, it has become common practice to have these third molars removed during a person’s late teens. Waiting to do so, could contribute to not only pain and infection in the jaw, but the cost of wisdom tooth extraction and repair can run very high later in life down the road.
