What To Expect From Dental Implant Surgery Recovery

Knowing what to expect during your dental implant surgery recovery will help ease the process after a procedure at our dental office conveniently located in Spring Hill, Florida. Doctor Juan C. Fabrega has put together a list of post operation guidelines to help make recovery go smooth for you.

No matter whether you are having a single tooth replacement performed or multiple dental implants put in to restore your oral health, these tips can help shorten recovery time with ease.

The Dental Implant Surgery Recovery Timeline

First 48 Hours After Surgery

After surgery is complete and you leave our office, there will be gauze over the surgical site. We ask that you leave this in place for at least 30 minutes before removing it.

Once removed, it is not uncommon for some bleeding to still be present. If so, replace with a fresh piece of gauze and bite down firmly for another 15 minutes to help clot the bleeding. Once bleeding has stopped there is no need to place any more gauze over the surgical area.

Slight oozing of the wound is common 24 to 48 hours after surgery. If some bleeding still persists, we suggest to bite down on a moistened tea bag. Black tea contains tannic acid which is known to shrink vessels and capilaries and can help stop bleeding in many cases. However, if bleeding is still continuing after using the tea bag, please call our office at (352) 848-1050 for further instruction.

Dental And Denture Care Center How To Brush

The First Week

After three or four days during the dental implant surgery recovery process, most patients start to see the swelling and any associated pain starts to diminish. If dissolving stitches were used, they will begin to fall out during this stage of the recovery process.

As pain starts to reduce, the use of over the counter pain relievers and medications can likely be scaled back as well as needed. However, depending on the extent of the dental surgery, it may be recommended that some patients continue taking medication for a full week.

The majority of patients can resume a normal eating schedule after about seven days after surgery. We will ask you to come back into the Dental and Denture Care Center in 10 to 14 days after surgery for a check up to make sure everything is healing properly.

What Is The Total Dental Implant Surgery Recovery Healing Timeline?

Most patients will need a few months to fully recover before the restoration can be completed and the tooth replacements are attached. It is likely that patients will feel fairly comfortable a few days after the surgery. However, the jawbone will need several weeks of healing time and to allow the bone to fuse to the implants.

Healing time is dependent on each individual case. However, on average, the total healing time takes about three to four months. In some cases where bone grafts or other procedures are needed to secure the implants, it could add to your healing times.

It is especially critical during the healing time to maintain good oral hygeine habits. Proper brushng and flossing is important to help keep harmful bacteria away from the surgical wound.
